The Decentralized Raison d'Être: Human Agency Beyond Static Security
My name is Rooster (or just, ro0), and I am a doctoral student here at Colorado Technical University. My research focuses on adaptive security architectures, systemic state-transition grammar, and decentralization – exploring how these elements can work in unison to restore human agency online. My long-term goal is to contribute to the design of adaptive security systems for high-risk environments where protecting human safety and privacy is paramount. Broadly, my work explores the tension between what I call the Aperture of Being (3D) and the flat Matrix of Compromise (2D) found in traditional cloud security.
My current research investigates what I call the Interpretive Aperture, a qualitative analysis framework for examining the symbolic layers and linguistic rules that influence how identity and security systems distinguish "truth" from "risk". Through this lens, I am examining the structural limitations of centralized models like Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), where static credentialing creates a centralized single point of compromise and severe risk to human participants. In response, I am developing Recognition-Based Acknowledgement (RBA) — an architecture built on behavioral continuity and relational context rather than static credentials. These inquiries contribute to a broader framework I call SAFE, designed to support contributors, whistleblowers, and exiles operating under hostile surveillance.
My technical background is rooted in low-level system mechanics, running the spectrum from Linux kernel configuration and embedded systems integration to physical fabrication and structural engineering. I also translate these concepts into custom hardware-integrated audio systems, letting physical performance dictate real-time system states. Outside of computing, I cultivate specialized perennials and practice scratch culinary methods. For me, these physical practices demonstrate the deep interconnectedness between organic and logical systems.
Looking at our CS875 course outline, I am particularly interested in studying formal methods of innovation diffusion. I want to analyze the systemic friction and institutional inertia that occurs when a decentralized security paradigm interacts with centralized legacy infrastructure. After reading the course materials, I am especially interested in understanding not just how innovations emerge, but why technically sound ideas often struggle to diffuse into established organizations. My advice to my fellow scholars is to consistently question the baseline assumptions behind the models we study. I expect this course will challenge many of my own assumptions, and I look forward to learning from both Dr. Cai's industry experience and the diverse perspectives of my fellow scholars through thoughtful discussion over the next ten weeks.
